Some charred wings with your potatoes?
Family events can be a stressful thing. Especially when you’re the one hosting them. Not only you need to play a good host for people you see only at these events and make sure they’re happy, but also prepare a big meal everyone is satisfied with. This might clarify why these chicken wings look more like a chocolate cake than chicken.
Maybe the real pickle is making sure to take the chicken out of the oven on time – some people like their chickens extra well done, so they make sure to keep it in the oven for as long as possible. One thing’s for sure, you definitely don’t want your chicken to look like charred coals covered in tar.
Cooking the actual meal when hosting a family event is not the only thing you have to worry about, though. Everyone knows the dessert is the real star of the evening, since it’s also the last thing to eat. People expect you to make the most amazing desserts, preferably something that has some fancy icing on top. If it comes as a cool shape, even better! These expectations intensify further during the holiday season.
So what could a good host do when asked to prepare some seasonally inspired strawberries? Trying to make them look like little snowmen, befitting the snowy season, of course. The result, however, is another story completely. At least they tried.
Stick to stick figures
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, some people believe. And what could be better than some nice pancakes to start the day with? Pancakes shaped like your loved ones, of course. Trying to put a smile one her face first thing in the morning, this husband tried to make his pregnant wife this super creative pancake. The goal was to make it look like his wife and the baby in her belly.
The result was a bit different. The pancake “lady” looks more like an ’80s robot, while the pancake “baby” looks like its winding key. Well, he certainly succeeded in making it a pancake his will never forget. We hope it was tasty at least.
The Cookie Monster. Or just a monster
Birthdays can be a big deal to some people, and especially children. Kids love having a big party where all their friends are invited. On this special day, parents try to be extra attentive to their kids’ requests, even if they are in the shape of some Cookie Monster cookies.
Clearly, the person making these did it with their eyes covered. Or, better yet, they’ve probably never heard of the Cookie Monster and did it solely based on their kids’ description of the character. Whatever the case might be, this is what came out in the end.
(Not so) sunny side up
Did we mention breakfast being the most important meal of the day? Try waking, brushing your teeth, going to the dining table, and having the first thing you see is your egg staring angrily at you. It’s known that food is directly associated with emotions.
Maybe this egg contains some heavy laden messages behind it to the person eating it. With this angry face, the message is kind of hard to miss. We just hope they worked it all out in the end.
What compromise looks like
Deciding what to eat can be a real dilemma. Especially for couples. Imagine standing in front of the fridge, pulling out something that you’ve been craving for a while… and then your significant other tells you they want something else. What do you do? Compromise.
These magnificent dishes were probably the product of some very long arguments on the subject of lunch or dinner. The people who made these probably thought to themselves they had to do something if they didn’t want to starve. We would probably choose starving.
The simpler the better?
Sometimes we just want something simple to eat. Some happy comfort food. And what could be better than some black, baked worms? No, not really. We’re not sure what it really looks like, but this dish was supposed to be the all-American mac and cheese.
Clearly, something went wrong there. We hope the person who made this has someone else to blame for this failure, because we see no other way to explain how you can fail in making just mac and cheese so bad.
I am (not) Groot
The person who made these cookies can sure take some tips on how to make decent-looking cookies. For example, knowing the character you’re inspired by, and not icing baked goods right after they’ve left the oven. Both could really harm the process and result in your final product looking like… this.
These Groot inspired cookies look more like brown weeds coming out of some radioactive goo, rather than the actual character they’re based on. This is mostly thanks to the melted icing, something we would think a basic baker would know.
The sushi shortcut
We get it, sometimes you just want to make something really bad, or your partner requests something specific, but you don’t have all the ingredients in the fridge. We’re just hoping this photo wasn’t taken from any restaurant table, because the person who made this clearly has no idea that the difference is a little… noticeable.
Either way, they tried really hard to make it look like the real thing, instead of doing the logical thing, like going to the grocery store. This is what happens when you make shortcuts in life.
Hobbies are all about channeling your inner uniqueness and letting the world see your personality through the things you do. This dish is definitely a good example of the inner fashionista this person is.
With a little too much time on their hands, this person managed to create three over-styled fish legs. We suggest they either stick to their day jobs or try experimenting on a piece of paper, first. Something is definitely fishy here.
The invasion of the alien eggs
What is it with eggs and fails? It seems like there is some kind of connection between creepy-looking and eggs. it’s really too bad that eggs are usually a breakfast dish, since we find it kind of unnerving to wake up and see this egg first thing in the morning.
This dish looks more like an alien than actual eggs. We have to admit, though, that if this was done on purpose, then this person has some real (creepy) talent. We just hope it’s not based on any real visual.
Bob the Builder – the Halloween version
Themed cooking can also be quite a challenge, since it needs to fit into certain standards. Famous movie or TV characters are a really popular choice of kids when they request a certain cake.
This cake, for example, was trying to be Bob the Builder. It ended up looking more like an eerie Halloween pumpkin, with its phosphoric, ghostly color, and its weirdly carved face. We’re not sure what the person making this was trying to do, but it is as far away from Bob the Builder as it can be.
Sometimes you try to cook or bake something nice and friendly for your family so you can all enjoy it together, but things just don’t go as planned. These baked goods were supposed to look like cute smiley faces.
They turned out more like the poor unfortunate souls in The Little Mermaid movie. They definitely look like they are asking to be rescued, though. Or a clean, fast demise. Whatever the case might be, they aren’t smiling no more.
The sweet smell of burning caramel
Cooking can be a little hazardous at times, as this picture clearly shows. We can just imagine coming home to this disaster. This…dish, if we can call it that, was supposed to be a sweet caramel.
This is what happens when you fall on your head and lose all memory of what you’ve been doing. Or simply just a case of having something more important to do, like watching TV, reading a book, doing squats, blinking… basically anything was probably more important at that moment.
Losing things sometimes can be very unfortunate. Especially if it’s something important, like keys, or your phone. You would expect, though, that something as frequently used as glasses would just stay in one place – the face – for most of the day, right? Wrong.
This person clearly has some hidden talents, if they managed to cook so well (what we really mean is, without burning anything), without seeing what he was doing. That honestly takes some real skills. Kudos.
Kids sure love drawing on things, with anything they can find. Because we’re sure this pig-cookie was some parent letting their kid roll with the icing bag because they bored, and that was their way to feel like they were “helping out.”
But think again. This work of art is entirely and adult’s craft. They were supposed to be the cutest sugar cookies, but look more like a kid’s drawing board. This is what we call abstract art. Or something.
Hasta la vista, baby
Penguins are one of the most adorable animals ever. So what could possibly be better than making penguin-shaped cookies for some fun afternoon tea with your kids? This is exactly what the person baking these thought to themselves, probably: some Oreos, some icing, easy.
In the end, it turned more like some scary looking, red-eyed Terminator on a white pedestal than a penguin. The people who ate these are probably never going to look at penguins the same ever again.
The revenge of the snowmen
Snowy seasons really are the best, especially when it comes to food. There’s nothing like some nice hot chocolate and cookies, while being wrapped up in a blanket in front of the TV. These snowy-themed cookies were supposed to be some cute melting snowmen, but each one turned sulkier and angrier than the other.
We’re guessing the person who made these might not be sharing our warm and fuzzy feelings about the wintery season. There’s no reason to take it out on the poor snowmen, though!
Sometimes we just want something quick to satisfy our sweet tooth. And what is faster than a brownie-in-a-cup, that could be heated in the microwave for a few minutes? It should have been easy enough.
The person who made this mess, however, was thinking more in the direction of a brownie-outside-a-cup. The microwave sure looks appetizing enough, though. Maybe the goal was making a chocolate dipping sauce to cover the entire microwave? If so, totally nailed it.
The force of the fail
May the force be with you. Really, though. Would you have guessed these are some not-so-awesome Star Wars-themed cookies? Probably not. But what do we know? Maybe they’re the limited edition sun-burned Princess Leia and the never-heard-of-before Darth Charcoal-Briquette Vader.
We hope they were at least as delicious as this description sounded. One thing is for sure, the person who made these should stick to the basics of mix and bake, without any additional complications.
Owl you need is talent
Yay! Some messy-looking Halloween treats! Just what we were hoping for. Wait, no. These are supposed to be pretzel-covered owls. We can’t ignore the imaginative spark here, though. The person responsible for this creation was definitely thinking ahead.
What came out was these jack-o-lantern cats with above and beyond planning, clearly. The level of creativeness is high. See? We can appreciate something even if it didn’t turn out as perfectly as it was supposed to be.
The ogre in the watermelon
Sometimes we search for food inspiration on the internet, stumble upon a nice-looking picture of a dish, and think to ourselves that it doesn’t look so hard to make. This is probably what went through the mind of the person who made this masterful creation.
They saw some picture of a fruit-filled watermelon looking like a baby in a crib, and thought to themselves they had to take it up a notch! And look what came out, a beautiful yellow baby Shrek. Fiona would be proud.
An experiment gone wrong
Cooking is not something every beginner can learn from scratch, especially if he or she tries to make a complicated dish from the get-go. It takes repeated error and trial to perfect a skill, but it mostly requires determination, something that we are sure the people cooking these dishes didn’t lack in.
Inspiration can come something seen on TV or in a cooking book. Sometimes it’s an inspiration to bake the cakes they see in their favorite downtown bakery. The one sure thing is, everyone wants their cooking to look like their favorite chef’s. What they didn’t expect, though, was that their dishes will look like an experiment gone wrong.
Back to (the messy) basics
Sometimes even the most basic dishes can turn out… not so great. At other times there might be different explanations for the dish turning out the way it did. Or at least, you could try and explain. For example, when your kid asks for a special kind of shaped omelette for breakfast, you try to do the best you can as their parent.
But as a working parent and during mornings, when you try to do things as fast as you can, it might not always turn out perfectly. Maybe this could explain this dish’s failure. Either way, it was sure to be comical in that house at the time. We’re just glad someone was there to take a picture.
