What should we expect from the Avatar sequels?

Right let’s get things straight, if you didn’t already know that Avatar is getting a sequel, then we have more news for you…there’s not just one, or two, or even three more sequels coming. There’s five coming right your way to a big screen near you.

James Camerons’s 2009 sci-fi family fantasy blew audiences away when it was released a whopping ten years ago. The wonderfully told story and mind-blowing special effects made it one of the most successful films of all time. It’s still has not been beaten as the highest-grossing film of all time – racking in a massive $2.7 billion. Let’s be honest, when Avatar 2 is released in 2021, the sequel’s box office will most likely overpass its preceder. One thing for sure is James Cameron is going to be one rich guy.

So what should we expect from the five sequels? When do they come out? Here’s all the latest scoop.

What are the release dates?

Avatar 2 is set for release on December 17, 2021. Avatar 3 will then follow on December 22, 2023. Next will be Avatar 4 on December 19, 2025. Finally, the last installment is set to be released in 8 years time – Avatar 5 on December 17, 2027.

That’s a whole lot of Avatar! Will they all be worth the wait? The production team better crack on if they’re looking to get them all out on time. Pandora ahoy.

Do they have official names?

Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but the BBC press has seen the official documentation for the four sequels, sparking rumors that they are called the following:

Avatar 2: The Way of Water
Avatar 3: The Seed Bearer
Avatar 4: The Tulkun Rider
Avatar 5: The Quest for Eywa

Who is the cast?

Well, all major stars of the first film are set to return, reprising their roles as the original cast. This means Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Sam Worthington have all signed long-term contracts to play part of the cast for however long their characters are part of the series. Things could certainly get interesting!

On top of the original cast, there are also other major names linked to the series including Edie Falco, Cliff Curtis, Kate Winslet, Vin Diesel, and Michelle Yeoh.

Do we have any plot details?

Producers have been particularly secretive surrounding the plot details of the upcoming films, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t got heard some Avatar gossip here and there. James Cameron himself has revealed that the majority of the first two sequels (Avatar 2 & 3) will take place underwater. Interesting.

Cameron has also noted that each sequel will be epic in themselves, all working as a standalone story itself rather than working as reliant installments in a serialized tale. Cameron has said “You don’t need to have seen Avatar 1 to see Avatar 2. All you need to do is sit there, and we will take you on a delightful visual and emotional journey that each come to their own conclusion.”

We don’t know about you, but things for this franchise are looking rather promising! About time too. It’s not like we’ve had to wait a decade? Other than that, there’s not much else we know about the franchise’s future, so you’ll just have to sit tight until 2021.
