Best teen comedies of the 2000s

Perhaps the film genre that resonates most with the joys of growing up is the teen comedy. It’s given us some absolute classics over the years. The genre acts as a hilarious dose of nostalgia, a perfect hybrid of romance, comedy, and the coming-of-age film.

The teen comedy has for decades been a popular type of film for us all to enjoy and escape adulthood – like Grease in the ’70s, The Breakfast Club in the ’80s, or Clueless in the ’90s. But we can’t help but think that the fresh turn of the millennium really helped the genre rejuvenate and redefine what the best of teen comedies can and should be – relatable, quotable, and downright hilarious. Here’s a look at some of the best teen-comedies of the 2000s.

American Reunion

The American Pie film franchise started with the original way back in 1999, and throughout the next decade, we got seven more movies. The original series that follows Jim and his pals is wildly enjoyable – there are some undeniably hilarious embarrassing moments. Poor Jim! Perhaps the best of these films is 2012’s American Reunion, which sees the gang reunite 13 years later. A lot had certainly changed. It was a return to form for the series and well worth a watch for a bit of light-hearted x-rated amusement.

Mean Girls

2004’s Mean Girls is everything you want from a teen flick. In fact, it’s a lot more than just your average teen comedy. It has become a pop culture phenomenon that still inspires memes and gifs today. Following misfit Cady as she struggles to place herself within the hierarchical cliques of her new high school, the film is endlessly re-watchable, tirelessly quotable, and full to brim with gags. “She doesn’t even go here.”

Superbad

Screenwriter turned actor Seth Rogen has given us some brilliant comedies over the years including 2008’s Pineapple Express, 2014’s Bad Neighbours, and 2014’s The Interview,  but perhaps his best is 2007’s Superbad. Trying to impress their high school crushes, we watch two loveable fools cause carnage as they attempt to buy underage goodies for a party. With a fantastically written and funny script, and some brilliant comic performances too, Superbad was the start of something great for a lot of its cast. Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, and Michael Cera have all gone on to have outstanding careers in film.

Scary Movie

“Wasssuuuppp?” Scary Movie inundated cinemas with roars of laughter when it was released in 2000. It’s a hilarious horror movie spoof, mostly basing its plot around 1999’s teen slasher hit Scream. Despite what the name suggests, it’s far from scary. Instead it makes you laugh out loud with moments of pure stupidity. It’s actually really smart and is sharply written, not just ironically mocking and parodying the conventions of horror, but also giving us some satirical commentary on teen pop culture. A great film for some easy-to-watch comic entertainment.

These are just four of what we think are the best teen comedies. If you were once a teenager, and you also like to laugh, then you’ll definitely enjoy these.
